How to Look Cute in Cold Weather

Coat and Tights: Aritzia

I've never been a fan of the winter months, especially here in Canada where winters seem to drag on forever. I used to feel that once November rolled around, style would have to take a back seat until the temperatures would begin climbing again in the spring. However, with time I began learning that winter can actually make you look more put-together, polished and chic all while keeping you warm.

I began learning not only about staying warm in the winter but doing it without looking like you're walking around wearing a sleeping bag. With so many options, you don't have to sacrifice style in the cold, it's just about finding the right pieces.

Choosing the Right Materials

Sometimes it's easier to get into a slump with your outfits during winter months but with winter, it also means we have more materials and textures to play with. Wool, knits, leather, suede and an endless possibilities in textures and colours. Play with different textures and colours and see what you're drawn to before pulling an outfit together.

Here are a few of my go-to's during the winter months that'll make you look chic, regardless how cold it gets.

Tailored Wool Coat: A wool coat pulls your whole look together. I find most people have a weakness when it comes to clothing, and coats are mine. If you're just starting out building your wardrobe, I'd recommend starting with a camel wool coat. The colour not only goes well with every print and colour in your wardrobe, in my opinion, camel makes everything look more expensive. The higher the wool content, the warmer the coat. I recommend looking for a wool content more than 60% to keep you toasty.

Parkas: If you live in colder cities, you know that you can't get through winter with just a wool coat...that's where the parka comes in. Although the puffer coats are having their moment right now, I personally just don't find them warm enough due to their length; I'm always freezing! They're the perfect go-to for weekends; just add a beanie and you're good to go.

OTK Boots: Date night but too cold for dress and heels? Then the otk boot is your best option. Get a pair in a neutral shade that you can wear with dresses, jeans, pants and mini skirts. Make sure you use a leather/suede protecting spray before you take them out for the first time. This will help keeping them clean and they'll last you longer.

Accessories

By adding more accessories to your rotation, you can change the look of your wool coats and puffers/parkas. Pick neutral colours to begin with in order for it to work with as many coats in your wardrobe, making it easier to interchange. Now that it's end of January, there are so many great winter finds on major sale. Take advantage of these sales and choose higher quality pieces that you'll be able to use for many years.
